Cabbies were scheduled to collect en masse out of the Town Hall at 1 pm on Wednesday, March 18. This is before the cabinet meeting. However, following the government’s present guidance to prevent all crowd gatherings, they had to cancel it.
“We have no choice but to postpone the demonstration until a later date. We will keep you all posted,” says GMB union representative, Ibrar Hussain. The fresh air area is scheduled to be enforced this year. It will debit high polluting coaches, taxis, buses, vans, and lorries for riding on the inside ring way and city centre, as well as the A61/Parkway junction and Park Square.
For taxis and big goods carriers, the cost will be £10 per day. For buses, heavy goods vehicles, and coaches it will be £50 per day.
Sheffield Council stated that they anticipate it will prompt drivers to update to more eco-friendly cars to prevent the costs.
A two-month discussion on the methods discovered taxi operators were very bothered, with 95% having to improve their vehicles. Earlier, over 100 taxi operators stated they resigned from their work due to the incoming adjustments.
“The survey results show people want to see action taken – but if we’re going to be successful in reducing pollution we need to help taxi drivers and local small businesses move to cleaner vehicles. It’s vital that we get investment from central government to assist local businesses and taxis to upgrade their fleets,” says cabinet member for transport and sustainability, Councillor Bob Johnson.
The administration’s present guidance on mass meetings is: “In line with the social distancing guidance it is advised that large gatherings should not take place. While the risks of transmitting the disease at mass gatherings are relatively low, these steps will also allow emergency services that would have been deployed for these events to be prioritised in alleviating pressure on public services,” he added.
Also, the government has encouraged members of the society to prevent unneeded social contact. They should also work from home where applicable.
