Taxi drivers in UK struggling financially due to the pandemic, may be able to get the financial assistance through Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) made available to local authorities that will support small businesses and sole traders applicable.
During the parliamentary discussion, labour MP for Nottingham East, Nadia Whittome asked, “To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, if he will introduce a specific grant for taxi drivers whose incomes have suffered as a result of the covid-19 outbreak?”
Taxi drivers, Unions and Reps around the UK called for dedicated industry support during this tough time when the income has been almost zero for many taxi drivers in UK.
Secretary of State, Paul Scully, said: “Grant support for Taxi Drivers may be available through the Additional Restrictions Grant, a discretionary scheme administered by local authorities. Local authorities are encouraged to support businesses from all sectors that may have been severely impacted by restrictions but are not eligible for the Restart Grant scheme. Local Authorities can use their local expertise to target businesses to support in their local area.”
He further added that Chancellor of the Exchequer announced for an additional £425m will be made available through Additional Restrictions Grant. This means more than £2bn is made available to Local Authorities since November 2020.
On 3rd March 2021, the Government announced £425million will be available for local authorities through the conditional top-up to the Additional Restrictions Grant from 1st of April 2021.
The ARG funding is to support businesses which are affected by the pandemic restrictions. The initial funding was available in the financial 2020-21 which can be used by 21/22.
Funding was available to eligible local authorities at point they first entered Tier 3 restrictions in October 2020. It also stated that local authorities in England are eligible for the Additional Restrictions Grant to receive the allocation of the second funding which is up to £425 million. This funding can be used for business purpose. Local authorities are encouraged to support businesses from different sectors that are severely impacted by the lockdown restrictions.
Depending on the local authority, taxi drivers can apply for the financial support. Taxi drivers need to connect with the local authority finding out if they are eligible for funding through Additional Restrictions Grant.
